Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 243272)

MEWP’s make up a specific group of specialized machines that enable people to work at heights. It is used to move persons to working positions where they are carrying out work from the work platform, with the intention that persons are getting on and off the work platform only at access positions at ground level or on the chassis. It consists at a minimum of a work platform with controls, an extending structure and a chassis.

Operators who are not adequately trained in MEWP operations are at great risk of injury or death. Training is a vital issue and DMR 18(11) prohibits the operation of MEWP’s by untrained persons.

This course will assist the learner operator in becoming a fully qualified MEWP operator who has the knowledge, skills and experience to operate a Mobile Elevated Work Platform in a safe and professional manner. This will allow certified operator by adding value to any organization.

Mobile Elevating Work Platform will include but are not limited to Cherry Picker, Scissor Lift, Boom Lift, Access Platform, Man Lift, Personnel Lift, Aerial Work Platform.

Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:

• Identify applications to decide on the appropriate Mobile Elevating Work Platform to be used.
• Assess risks in the work environment to prevent and eliminate safety hazards.
• Conduct pre-operation inspection of Mobile Elevating Work Platform.
• Make use of safe operating procedures and practices for a Mobile Elevating Work Platform.
• Place people, tools and equipment correctly and safely on Mobile Elevating Work Platform.
• Conduct shut-down procedures and stow Mobile Elevating Work Platform safely
